Top 3 strikers of the Championship season so far, including former Sunderland star

Top Three Strikers In The Championship So Far This Season

When thinking of Andre Gray, Danny Ings, Chris Wood, Andy Carroll and many more you realise that the Championship is often the place to find striking talent in the UK. As it happens I don’t think this season is a vintage one for proper strikers, though time will tell, nonetheless, we have still seen some praiseworthy performances from various front men.

Leon Clarke has 15 in 25 for Sheffield United but, like Bobby Reid, is playing in an attacking team and has been handed the majority of his club’s chances.

Leon Bonatini (12 in 29) would have made the list but I can’t get out of my mind the sort of on-a-plate service he gets while also now going eight league games without a goal which is far from ideal. For my money then, the following three have most to shout about this season so far:

Lewis Grabban (Sunderland)

Now-departed of course having been recalled by parent club Bournemouth, the 30-year-old has truly reached his highest level from an individual point of view this term, scoring 12 goals in 19 games for a dire side which says a lot.

Without Grabban, Sunderland would be completely stranded right now and that sort of contribution can’t be ignored. He has scored against Derby as well away at Brentford, Villa and a brace at Norwich which shows the quality of defences he has been netting against.

Jordan Hugill (Preston North End)

The 25-year-old, generally speaking, is getting better all the time and his eight goals in 27 league games doesn’t really tell the story. He is about much more than goals and in fact his battling, unselfish play brings others into the game and without that, Preston would have gotten far fewer goals regardless of who gets the final touch.

Hugill has been doing his work this season all under a cloud having asked to leave the club on more than one occasion, also it’s to be noted that three of his 10 goals have been in 1-0 wins showing just how vital his contributions often are.

Gary Madine (Bolton Wanderers)

OK, he may not be a household name to most but at 27, the likelihood is that he is just peaking now and is better than we all think – he’s just doing it at the wrong club.

Bolton are a weak link in this league right now and so it’s harder for strikers in his situation to find goals. Nevertheless, Madine has 10 in 28 in the Championship including strikes against Leeds, Derby, Cardiff and Sheffield United, and scoring goals for this Bolton side deserves a mention, for me, at least.
