Top-class Grealish, Fantastic Grabban – The best and the worst rated Aston Villa players vs Leeds

Aston Villa 1-0 Leeds United: Grabban’s Goal Strengthens Villa’s Bid For 2nd Spot

Another excellent win for Aston Villa that confirmed that they will definitely be playing in the Championship playoffs this season. It also boosted their hopes of automatic promotion, with Cardiff now looking worried.

The difference between the two teams was obvious on the night and the creative players showed the gulf in class. Grealish, Snodgrass and Grabban shone, whilst Leeds looked devoid of ideas in the final third.

Aston Villa Player Ratings

Sam Johnstone – 6.5/10

Johnstone only had one save to make all game but carried that out well. He had an average night but wasn’t really challenged.

Neil Taylor – 7.5/10

Taylor attacked well down the left-hand side with three successful dribbles down that side and also looked good defensively.

James Chester – 8/10

The Villa centre-back had a very good game and easily dealt with the Leeds strikers, won all of his aerial challenges and put in some good tackles.

Mile Jedinak – 7.5/10

Jedinak was needed to deputise at centre-back once again and looked excellent alongside James Chester. Won everything that came his way and even got a shot away at one point.

Ahmed Elmohamady – 7/10

Elmohamady looked solid in his familiar right-back position. Did nothing spectacular but performed his role well and never looked threatened.

Glenn Whelan8/10

Captain on the night, Glen Whelan had another great game in the central defensive midfield position. He broke up the play and looked like a mountain which Leeds couldn’t climb.

Lewis Grabban8/10

Grabban started on the left-wing ahead of Adomah, who has been on a bad run of form and he excelled in this position. He added some height and power to the left-wing and grabbed the match-winning goal for Villa.

Josh Onomah8.5/10

The 20-year-old has not played much for the first-team this season but it looks like he will be playing a lot more after this performance. Looked a threat when driving forward whilst also tackling well and winning lots of his aerial duels. A top class performance.

Jack Grealish – 9.5/10

Grealish just keeps getting better and better and looks like a player who more than deserves a chance to play at the top level. He managed an astonishing 10 successful dribbles and got an assist to show for his persistence.

Robert Snodgrass – 7.5/10

Snodgrass was excellent again but mostly for his defensive work against Pablo Hernandez. Tackled well and won a lot of his aerial challenges.

Jonathan Kodjia – 6/10

Did not have a good game and Villa looked threatening after he was replaced. His passing was absolutely woeful and only managed to have 2 of Villa’s 17 shot. Less than impressive for a lone striker.

Substitutes

Albert Adomah – 6.5/10

Replaced Kodjia after 67 minutes and allowed space for Grabban to get further forward. Didn’t do too much and desperately needs to get back to his best form.

Scott Hogan – 6/10

Came on in the 78th minute to replace Grabban and give some legs to the Villa attack.

Christopher Samba – 6/10

Came on in the 85th minute to replace Onomah and give the midfielder a rest after his spectacular performance.
