Tottenham accepting Real’s irresistible £100m+ offer would spell disaster – opinion

Why Tottenham must reject a swap deal involving Kane and Benzema

According to Spanish outlet El Desmarque (h/t The Express), Real Madrid are interested in signing Harry Kane and are ready to offer Karim Benzema in a mega swap deal to Tottenham.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has been keeping tabs on Harry Kane for some time now and is willing to bring the England skipper to Santiago Bernabeu in the summer of 2020. However, the report claims (h/t The Express) Spurs are asking Real for Karim Benzema plus £103m in cash, to part with Kane, who is valued at £171m by the north Londoners.

One sticking point is the wages that Benzema is looking for as he is the highest-paid player at the Los Blancos. But Tottenham are not prepared to go anywhere near those wages. (h/t The Express)

Benzema is now 31 years old and is starting to reach the end of his peak. However, by looking at his form and consistency, it is difficult to think whether the Los Blancos must rely on him for a few more years or start plotting replacements.

Luka Jovic was brought in from Eintracht Frankfurt but the Serbia international has been struggling to challenge Benzema for a starting role. It is fair to say Zinedine Zidane hasn’t given him enough chances but from his handful of appearances for the club, Jovic has just managed to score once so far.

Harry Kane would be a fantastic fit at Real and an ideal replacement for Benzema, who has scored 11 goals in all competitions so far this season. The England international is one of the most coveted forwards in world football and will perhaps soon enter the prime stages of his career.

However, Spurs must do everything possible to keep hold of their star striker amidst Madrid’s interest.

Tottenham have certainly fallen prey to big offers from Real Madrid in the past. Both Gareth Bale and Luka Modric have traded Tottenham for life with the Spanish giants in recent years. Kane is arguably the club’s most valuable asset and selling him to Madrid, no matter what the price, would be a bitter pill for Spurs fans to swallow.

Perhaps even more importantly, losing the 26-year-old would rob Tottenham of their commercial value.

Verdict

Kane is undoubtedly still one of the club’s star assets and even though his form has dipped a bit this season, he is certainly still Tottenham’s talisman.
