Tottenham beating PL rivals to sign this £36.5m Barcelona speedster would be a statement of intent by Pochettino

Tottenham opinion: Spurs should win the race for Malcom

Italian news outlet Calciomercato has reported that Tottenham and Everton are interested in making a move for Barcelona star Malcom. The young forward signed for the Catalan giants last summer for £36.5m but has struggled to make an impact under Ernesto Valverde.

To make things even worse for the Brazilian, he was never the man that the Barcelona manager really wanted. The Daily Mail has already revealed in July 2018 that Valverde really wanted Chelsea man Willian.

But the fact that Valverde didn’t want Malcom has really shown over the last six months or so, with the 22-year-old only playing 4% of Barcelona’s games. That adds up to around 15 appearances and a total of 514 minutes.

That has really affected the Brazilian’s growth, which has called into question his decision to first sign for Barcelona. Until that point, Malcom’s career had been a series of brilliant decisions. He joined Bordeaux from Corinthians after making his mark with the latter.

But it was really in the Ligue 1 with Bordeaux where Malcom showcased his abilities, becoming the club’s main man in the process. It was his form in France that first sparked Tottenham’s interest and it’s why the North London side should make the first move.

Clearly, Malcom has struggled to make an impact under a manager who doesn’t want him. But under a manager like Mauricio Pochettino, there is a chance that Malcom could find his way back into the fold, similar to what the likes of Lucas Moura and Heung-Min Son have done.

However, the 22-year-old Brazilian is a burgeoning young talent and someone who can make a brilliant impact in the Premier League. Malcom’s sheering pace and clinical nature in front of goal will certainly help take the burden off Tottenham’s other superstars.

But more importantly, he’ll add another dimension to Tottenham’s attacking style. While Lucas Moura has made an impact, the Brazilian’s form has petered off and that has affected the club.

It has seen Mauricio Pochettino depend heavily on both Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane, with the two scoring 28 goals in the Premier League.

But barring that, few others have made an impact, with Moura a distant third with six to his name. It shows exactly why Tottenham have to win the race for Malcom, as it will help their hopes of getting their hands on the league title.

Conclusion

Malcom needs a new start to his career. Tottenham, on the other hand, need someone who isn’t named either Harry Kane, Dele Alli or Christian Eriksen to depend upon. Both the club and the player have a future that they need to think about, which does make them a great fit for each other.
