Tottenham getting this 27-year-old to sign a new contract is a dire necessity for Pochettino – Agreed?

Tottenham Hotspur opinion: Spurs should get Christian Eriksen to sign a new deal

According to a report in the Metro, Tottenham Hotspur are looking to hand Christian Eriksen a new contract in the following weeks. The Danish international has been linked with an exit from Spurs with only a year left on his contract.

The 27-year-old came through the Ajax system and joined Spurs in the 2013/14 season and has been a part of one of Spurs’ most exciting sides in many years. While his start to life at White Hart Lane didn’t start ideally under Andres Villas-Boas, he found some form under Tim Sherwood.

However, it was only when Mauricio Pochettino joined the club did Eriksen show why he was one of the best young prospects during his time at Ajax and has gone on to become one of the best creative players in the Premier League and Europe.

Eriksen’s set-piece taking ability, his two-footed ability, stamina and vision are of the very highest level.

He is very important to Mauricio Pochettino’s pressing system and is often the trigger for the rest of the side to push high and win the ball high up the pitch. Losing Eriksen would take away the creativity from the Spurs side and finding a replacement will cost Spurs a lot of money.

Spurs should do what they can to keep a hold of their best players as they head into an era with a new stadium and new hope after making it into the UEFA Champions League final last season but falling just a little short on the final hurdle.

It’ll be important for Spurs to attract the very top players in the coming years if they want to keep Pochettino invested in the project and Eriksen is the kind of player that Spurs will have to retain for this purpose.

If Spurs lose their best players, players from the outside will no longer look at Spurs as a club that’s competing for trophies and the club will eventually plateau.

Eriksen would also likely have his years at his prime in Spurs, which would help the younger players that will come through to have an example within the side.

Conclusion

Mauricio Pochettino has already signed Tanguy Ndombele and it would be a real shame if we do not get to witness a midfield that has him, Eriksen and Dele Alli complimenting each other. Getting Eriksen to sign a new deal will be one of Spurs’ best moves this season.
