Why Tottenham Need to Act Quick And Seal Helder Costa Deal

Wolverhampton Wanderers star winger Helder Costa is a hot property in the market and has been attracting interest from Premier League, with Liverpool particularly keen on bringing Costa to Anfield in the upcoming summer transfer window.

There will be no shortage of suitors if Wolves decide to sell their wide-man in the summer, but one club who will be served very well if they make a move for the 23-year old is Tottenham Hotspur.

The winger moved to the Molineux Stadium on loan from Benfica in the summer of 2016, but owing to his eye-catching displays Paul Lambert’s side made the deal permanent in the winter transfer window for a fee of £13 million in January.

Costa has been an absolute revelation since moving to England has been one of Wolves’ very few shining stars in a season filled with gloom. Costa has netted 10 goals so far this term and has also chalked up six assists to his name from 34 appearances across all competitions.

With his pace and wizardry on the flank, Costa has bedazzled defences this season and has been a constant threat to oppositions throughout. He put in one of his best displays of the season against Liverpool in Wolves’ FA Cup fifth round triumph at Anfield and his performances haven’t gone unnoticed.

Technically gifted and blessed with abundance of pace and trickery on the ball, Costa also possesses exceptional abilities from set-piece situations and can pierce the ball through defences to set his teammates through on goal. Capable of playing on either flank, the 23-year old is an excellent crosser of the ball as well and could bring the strikers into play from wide areas.

The former Benfica man is exactly what Tottenham need at this point, as he would offer something very different in terms of attack, to what is available at Mauricio Pochettino’s disposal at White Hart Lane. The North Londoners have been chasing a player of similar ilk since the summer of 2016, but failed in attempts to land their primary target Wilfried Zaha and could not add any personnel in January either.

In Costa, Pochettino will be getting his hands on an extremely talented and hard-working winger who possesses the speed necessary to stretch defences in the wide areas and has the quality to deliver balls from out wide and can take an aim at goal as well. A direct threat on the flanks, Costa would also fit perfectly into the way Tottenham like to play, given his excellent work rate and intense, energetic nature of play.

Given his eye for goal, the Portuguese U-23 international could go onto ease the goal scoring burden on Tottenham’s star striker Harry Kane to a certain extent and will provide excellent competition to the likes of Erik Lamela, Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-Min. Without an iota of doubt, he will be a huge improvement on the failed summer recruits, Georges-Kevin N’Koudou and Moussa Sissoko.

Tottenham have been searching for variety and flexibility in attack and Costa could provide that much-needed alternate dimension in the final-third for the Lilywhites and will also be available at a cheap price. But they will need to act quick in the market if they are to beat the competition and sign him in the summer.
