Tottenham hijacking Arsenal’s move for this 18-year-old defender would help Poch pull one over rivals

Tottenham Hotspur opinion: Spurs should hijack William Saliba

According to a report in the Guardian, Tottenham Hotspur are looking to hijack the Arsenal target William Saliba of St. Ettiene. This will not go down well with Arsenal fans as they’ve been anticipating this deal to take place for some time now. If Spurs are to pull this deal off, it will only add to their intense rivalry.

The Frenchman is one of the best young centre-back prospects in the world. He is still only 18-years old but looks well beyond his years. He has played at right-back and centre-back in his short time and is already quite a physical specimen.

He had a breakthrough season, where he made 16 appearances in the Ligue 1. He is already quite strong, very quick at his feet and very comfortable on the ball. There are similarities in his technique to that of French World Cup winner Rafael Varane.

Spurs are already looking quite active in the transfer window after getting the purchases of Jack Clarke from Leeds United and Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon. The Frenchman’s signature is particularly impressive as he has the potential to become one of the best midfielders in Europe based on his exploits last season.

Spurs have had one of the best backlines over the last couple seasons led by Hugo Lloris, Toby Alderweirld and Jan Verthongen. They’re all getting older and lack the legs to play most games throughout a season. Spurs have the likes of Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth who are next in line but they aren’t ready to start games yet.

Spurs know that getting to the Champions League final can’t be a one-off and that with the right additions over time, they can build another squad that is capable of fighting on all fronts. Their rivals Arsenal are in a precarious position as they don’t have the financial backing that they used and the signing of Saliba will go down as another stab at the Gunners.

Conclusion

Spurs have finished above the Gunners in the league for 2 seasons now and it doesn’t look likely this season with Arsenal only having purchased Gabriel Martinelli. Spurs have a big season to look forward with a full season at their new stadium and some new players potentially as well.

The singing of Saliba will help secure their defence for the forseeable future.
