Tottenham reviving interest in signing this German defensive target from last summer would serve them well

Why Jonathan Tah would be a brilliant signing for Tottenham

Back in March 2018, the Football London claimed that Tottenham were interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah. However, a move didn’t materialise then and the German defender has since stayed put at Bayer Leverkusen.

Jonathan Tah, 23, has already established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s top young defenders after signing for Leverkusen from Hamburg a few years ago. He is so highly rated by Leverkusen that they tied him to a new five-year deal last year itself.

So, Tottenham will need to fork out a substantial amount of money if they are to sign the German central defender. And with the transfer window to close next week, they must rekindle their interest in Tah and attempt to thrash out a deal with Leverkusen.

Spurs have already signed Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon, but Mauricio Pochettino needs to add some more quality players to build on last season’s third-place finish in the Premier League. Pochettino could definitely do well with a new central defender, with Football Italia claiming AS Roma want Toby Alderweireld.

Alderweireld’s current contract expires next summer, however, so Daniel Levy would surely consider selling him for cheaper than losing him for free in 2020.

The Belgian is a vitally important player for Spurs, but the last thing they will want to do is lose him for nothing next summer. Levy will undoubtedly want to get the best deal that he can for his club, and that might just mean the end of Alderweireld’s Spurs career this summer.

Plus, Jan Vertonghen—one of Premier League’s most consistent defenders for the last couple of seasons—isn’t getting any younger. That makes it ever so important for Tottenham to bring in a new centre-half and they could do a great job by signing Jonathan Tah.

Standing at 6ft 5in tall, Tah is a monster of a defender, blessed with immense physical strength and power. He is capable of winning every single aerial duel due to his towering frame.

Aside from his tough defending and doggedness, the Germany international is extremely composed with the ball at his feet and possesses vision to pick out his team’s creative players in the attacking third.

The 23-year-old is a huge threat in the opposition box during set-pieces and he compensates his lack of pace with his positional awareness and reading of the game. Physically dominant and athletically gifted, his ability to carry out the ball from the back makes him perfect for Pochettino’s system.

Verdict

At just 23-years-old, Tah also fits into Pochettino’s model of buying young players that can be developed into a world-beater.
