Tottenham Hotspur opinion: Spurs should revive their interest in Julian Weigl

Premier League action will begin once again and clubs are scrambling to have their transfer dealings done and dusted within that time. One side that desperately needed reinforcements were Tottenham Hotspur after not spending any funds for the whole of last season.

However, there is room for optimism after the purchase of Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon. Ndombele is a fantastic purchase, as he’s already a France international and is the ideal replacement for the departed Mousa Dembele.

Spurs also signed Jack Clarke from Leeds United but the young Englishman is heading back, which is why Spurs will need greater reinforcements to make progress on last season.

One player Spurs could look at is Julain Weigl from Borussia Dortmund. The German international has fallen by the wayside in recent years with managerial changes at Dortmund, leaving him unsettled with a particular role at the Signal Iduna Park.

Julian Weigl

Spurs were linked with the German not so long ago and Mauricio Pochettino would be a fantastic manager to help him regain some of his best attributes. Pochettino has a reputation for reigniting careers, as he has shown with Lucas Moura and is a very flexible manager in a tactical sense.

Weigl is someone who likes to play from a deeper position and dictate the tempo of the game. His game and starting position resembles that of former Spurs player, Michael Carrick. He has a fantastic range of long passing and while he’s not the most industrious or dynamic player, he uses his positioning to read the danger and intercept the ball.

Spurs have sold Kieran Trippier, which will have made them significantly weaker and have also let go of Fernando Llorente, who played a very important part in getting them some invaluable points.

There’s no guarantee that they’ll hold onto their top-four slot and make a similar impact in the Champions League by just adding Tanguy Ndombele, as he’s merely someone who replaces what Dembele offered.

Conclusion

Eric Dier and Harry Winks did not have the best of seasons after showing a lot of promise in prior terms in a deeper role.

Dier is more of a centre-back and Winks can’t play in the deepest holding role, as he’s an easy target for the opposition markers. Weigl would be the best option and Spurs should make the move.

Spurs need to continue their push forward, otherwise, it’s going to be another season without silverware.
