Tottenham signing this no-nonsense Championship starlet would sort out their backline in the long run

Tottenham opinion: Should Spurs make a move for Ben Godfrey?

According to reports from the Metro, Tottenham are very interested in a move for Norwich City centre-back Ben Godfrey. The report further adds that the 21-year-old defender has been in great form and was the corner-stone of the Canaries back-line.

It’s why Manchester United, Arsenal and even Liverpool have all been linked with a move for the young starlet. However, given the trouble that Tottenham will be in once the season is officially over, the North London side need to win the race for the young star.

Toby Alderweireld’s meagre £25million release clause does give them a few problems, especially with Manchester United and Arsenal linked with moves for the Belgian centre-back.

Not only that, if this season has proved anything, it’s that Tottenham need back-up and they need quality stars in their side. Juan Foyth has done well but he has also struggled quite often to keep up with the first-team stars.

What Mauricio Pochettino needs is someone like Ben Godfrey, especially given the class and the confidence he oozes. An up and coming star, the Norwich City centre-back has shown that he has the ability to play for a top Premier League side in the near future.

Cool, calm and composed with or without the ball, Godfrey has been an integral part of Norwich City’s plans this season. Godfrey is very confident on the ball and loves surging forward despite being a centre-back by trade.

Furthermore, the Norwich City centre-back has a brilliant passing range and combines that with his no-nonsense style of defending. He finished the season having averaged 1.1 tackles, 3.5 clearances, and a rather impressive passing accuracy of 89.7% per game.

That makes him perfect for Mauricio Pochettino’s style of play, as the Argentine expects his centre-backs to be the modern kind. Even players in his current squad, from Davinson Sanchez to Jan Vertonghen are very comfortable with the ball at their feet.

It’s what makes the move a perfect fit and Pochettino’s history with younger players does make it a great prospect. He can not only help Godfrey grow even further but he could help him become a massive star in the near future.
