Tottenham signing this 22-year-old Champions League semifinalist would make them worthy title challengers next season

Tottenham opinion: Spurs interested in Donny van de Beek – a good choice?

Ajax star Donny van de Beek is open to a move to Tottenham in the near future, revealing as much in an interview with Ajax 1. The 22-year-old midfielder’s form this season has seen him get scouted and Tottenham have been linked (Calciomercato).

It’s no surprise, however, given just how well he has performed. Along with the rest of Ajax’s squad this season, Donny van de Beek has been a big part of the side that has somehow managed to reach the Champions League semi-final.

But what has won them plaudits is the way they have done it, walking in with a lot of style and youthful exuberance. Few emphasise that as much as Donny van de Beek does, and he’s among their brightest starlets.

A box-to-box midfielder, the 22-year-old has covered a lot of ground this season before being switched over to a number 10 role.

Despite that not being his preferred position, Van de Beek has done well with his creative talents and work ethic, playing a big part. For Tottenham, it makes him one of their best summer targets and someone they need to make the move for.

The Dutchman is much better than converted winger Moussa Sissoko and has a better ceiling than Harry Winks. Moreover, he’s consistently played football at the highest level this season and has never fazed from the challenge despite playing the likes of Juventus and Real Madrid.

He flourished against both the mentioned clubs and was amongst the club’s best players. His creative dominance and work ethic makes him a world-class option for Tottenham and at the same time, Donny van de Beek’s greatest weakness is his defensive struggles.

The 22-year-old is at best an enthusiastic defender and while he does run himself to the ground, he averages 0.7 fouls a game and 1.4 tackles per game. It shows his defensive frailty but Tottenham have other players in their ranks to help make up the difference next season.

At the moment, manager Mauricio Pochettino has a great core at his disposal but it’s not perfect. They depend heavily on Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen but have few others to help soften the blow when the two do not perform.
