Why Tottenham Hotspur should make a move for Andre Gomes

According to the Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in making a move for Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes. The Portuguese star is currently on a season-long loan with Premier League outfit Everton, who too are interested in making the move permanent after his superb performances for the club this season.

The Lilywhites failed to make a single transfer in the summer window and must definitely go for the on-loan Barcelona midfielder.

Tottenham star Mousa Demebele will most likely depart the club at the end of the season and Eric Dier has failed to show any sort of consistency in his displays. Harry Winks has looked a lot better this season but Spurs are surely going to need another man in the midfield.

Andre Gomes

Gomes would be an ideal option given his world-class qualities. The 25-year-old was a a Barcelona player for a while and that should be enough evidence to justify his talent. The Portuguese international has come to Merseyside and completely eradicated their midfield woes.

The Barcelona midfielder has shown drive and guile in the middle of the park. He is extremely comfortable at picking up the ball from deep areas to initiate an attack in no time. This is something the Spurs holding midfielders have failed to do.

The likes of Dembele and Dier often take too long on the ball and waste good opportunities going forward. Pochettino would not have to worry about that issue if he lands Gomes. The 25-year-old is superb at releasing the ball at the right time to dispatch one of his forwards.

He has averaged a pass success rate 85.9% for the Toffees this season, creating 1 big chance in that time and picking up 1 assist as well. After returning from injury, Gomes has started all 8 games for Everton under Marco Silva. (Stats courtesy – Whoscored)

The midfielder thrives in a free role, which allows him to push forward at will but also requires him to come back and support the defence. He will surely flourish in Pochettino’s 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-2-1-2 formations this season.

Tottenham should definitely make a move for Andre Gomes. Surely, it’s going to be a tug of war between the Lilywhites and the Toffees but if Spurs are to mount a strong title challenge, they certainly have to land some good players.
