Tottenham signing this in-form Bundesliga star would get them a perfect backup for Kane

Why Breel Embolo could be a brilliant signing for Tottenham

It has been the worst of starts for last year’s Champions League finalists, Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs are currently struggling in the Premier League, having managed to win just four games so far, and are 10th on the table. Even though they have performed well in the Champions League, poor results in the league have led to Mauricio Pochettino’s sacking.

And Pochettino, who served the club for five years, has been replaced by one of the best managers of this era, Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho, who was axed by Manchester United 11 months ago, will look to reinvent himself on every level at Tottenham. Pochettino did an excellent job in harnessing young talent, but Mourinho should take a dip in the January transfer window to reinforce his squad.

Harry Kane remains the club’s undisputed first-choice striker but the dearth of back up in the ranks could harm Tottenham in the longer run. The England international is one of the best strikers in Europe but unfortunately, he has endured injury problems over the last few seasons, forcing him to miss a lot of games.

With Tottenham allowing the likes of Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen to leave in the summer, Mourinho should look to bring in some cover for star striker Kane.

Back in May 2016, Telegraph had claimed that Tottenham were interested in signing Breel Embolo, who was then plying his trade for Swiss giants FC Basel. However, a deal didn’t go through and he joined FC Schalke a month later.

In his debut season at Schalke, Breel Embolo suffered a serious injury following a foul from Kostas Stafylidis – a complicated ankle fracture, ruptured syndesmosis and medial collateral ligament damage, which ruled him out for the remainder of the season.

He made his return after missing nearly a full year of football. In his three-year stay at Schalke, the 22-year-old managed just 12 goals in 61 games across all competitions.

Embolo left Schalke in the summer to join Bundesliga rivals Borussia Monchengladbach and has hit the ground running for his new club, scoring three goals in nine league games. With the Switzerland international impressing at Gladbach, Spurs must reignite their interest when the transfer window reopens.

In the 22-year-old, Spurs would get a striker with a brilliant technique, power and movement. The Cameroon-born star is a difficult customer to deal with in the box and his physical qualities could make him a good fit for English football. Embolo would make a great understudy to Kane but he’s also proven that he’s got the versatility to play out wide.

Verdict

A lack of cover for Kane was a regular criticism of Tottenham under Pochettino and Embolo could fill the hole. Hence, Mourinho must plot a January swoop for the Borussia Monchengladbach star.
