Tottenham signing this PL midfield star would instantly turn them into title challengers – opinion

Tottenham opinion: Should Spurs sign Abdoulaye Doucoure?

Tottenham’s biggest downfall in the Premier League this season has been due to their lack of firepower in central midfield.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been overly reliant on Christian Eriksen’s quality in the advanced position but the Dane has seldom received good-enough support from the players behind him.

The likes of Harry Winks and Eric Dier have been massively inconsistent, while Dele Alli’s form has also been a huge letdown.

Moussa Sissoko has been a revelation in the centre of the park but if Tottenham want to have any chance of competing for the title, they should be looking to aim higher.

Mousa Dembele’s departure proved to be a massive blow and Tottenham’s inability to replace him has cost them dearly on more than one occasion.

Spurs should make it a point to bring in a powerful box-to-box midfielder in the summer who can be an asset both in attack and defensively.

Watford’s Abdoulaye Doucoure would be a phenomenal addition to this Tottenham side and Mauricio Pochettino should have him high on his list of potential summer transfer targets.

The North Londoners were heavily linked with Doucoure back at the end of last year and the Frenchman was touted as a replacement for Victor Wanyama. However, Spurs failed to sign a single player in January, like they did last summer, which pushed them out of the top three.

Doucoure has been a standout performer for Watford this season and played a huge part in their run in the Premier League as well as the FA Cup.

The Frenchman’s presence in Javi Gracia’s midfield gave brilliant defensive cover for their backline as well as tremendous support to their forwards in possession.

The 26-year-old missed just three games in the Premier League this season and scored 5 goals and assisted a further 6 from midfield.

Doucoure’s end product will massively improve in a better team such as Tottenham’s and the side’s fluid movement in the final third will give him enough space to have an impact.

Doucoure can play both as a defensive midfielder and as a number 8, which gives the option of dropping Eriksen to a box-to-box role with Dele Alli in front of them.

That would make Tottenham’s attack immensely attacking without compromising on the defence and it could cause serious damage to most sides in the world.

Conclusion

Tottenham’s midfield will be complete with the addition of Abdoulaye Doucoure in the summer.

The Frenchman will bring in everything that Spurs have lacked since Dembele’s departure and Pochettino will finally have a reliable midfield that would be capable enough to help Spurs with their title challenge next season.
