There are not many players in the world who can boast a resume like Sami Khedira. The German has won the Champions League, La Liga and more importantly, he has won the World Cup as he was part of the German team in last summer’s tournament. Yet for some reason, he has not been the number 1 player in his role at Real Madrid that could be due to his on and off move away from the Madrid club last season or the fact that his return has been plagued not only by injuries but also by the form of Toni Kroos and Luca Modric.
Either way, the worst kept secret in the Real Madrid team is finally out and Sami Khedira has stated that he is going to leave the Spanish giants at the end of the season and there still might be a couple of clubs waiting in the wings to sign the German.
Is he worth the gamble?
The biggest stumbling block any team might have when they want to sign Khedira is that he is a bit rusty. Although the German won the World Cup with Germany, he has only made 17 appearances for the club this season, injuries playing a huge role in limiting his game time but also the fact that Kroos and Modric and the signing of Lucas Silva in January has made it even harder for him to get a game.
Arsenal were one of the clubs in the wings to sign the German and this could be the news that they needed to complete his signing on a free. The 27 year old could become key to Arsenal’s midfield problems especially with the likes of Arteta, Rosicky and Flamini not getting any younger, a 27 year old, well rested Khedira could be brilliant for the Gunners.
He had been one of the best players for Real until this season and was a major lynchpin for Germany until injury got the better of him. The German might not have played as many games as he would have liked, but a new challenge in a new country could be the perfect fill up for him.
Khedira still has a lot to offer when it comes to playing and getting a regular run of games for a club could actually change his issues related to form and fitness. The German is on the radar for a lot of other Premier League clubs, but Arsenal still have the chips in place thanks to their history of having German players, they have Mertesacker & Ozil while Podolski is away on loan to Inter Milan, but he has also stated that he could be back next season.
Arsenal should not miss out on this huge signing, they might not look like a perfect pair right now but you never know how things go in football and this is a gamble worth taking.
