Liverpool fans were ecstatic on Wednesday morning as the news broke that Philippe Coutinho had signed a contract extension with the club. However, for Arsenal fans, the news was particularly painful.
While Philippe Coutinho is now undoubtedly Liverpool’s most valuable asset, the Gunners have been waiting for close to a year for their two biggest stars to sign new deals at the Emirates.
Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil’s contract situations seem to be the most needlessly prolonged sagas in some time and, for Arsenal fans, it defies belief that the club haven’t ensured that they hang onto their two best players.
Liverpool’s handling of Coutinho’s contract was a lesson in efficiency as they opened negotiations with the Brazilian and swiftly tied him down to a new five year deal that is reportedly without a release clause. Meanwhile, Arsenal are in an apparent poker game with Sanchez and Ozil as they await for the two stars to lower their wage demands.
