“Unreal”, “A Monster”: Some Manchester United fans heap the praise on star midfielder after an emphatic 2-0 win vs Chelsea + Match report

Chelsea vs Manchester United report: Manchester United report

Manchester United beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to progress to the quarterfinals of the FA Cup. This eventful game began with both teams passing the ball really well and sharing the possession equally but as the minutes wore on, Manchester United started to gradually control the ball.

They created a couple of good plays and had an early corner as well. Unfortunately, they were unable to take advantage of this early pressure and Chelsea slowly crawled back into the game.

They began to enjoy much more of the ball and were conjuring up some good moves using Eden Hazard and Pedro really well on the flanks. Gonzalo Higuain had a free header just outside the box from a Cesar Azpilicueta cross, which he put narrowly wide.

In the 31st minute though, against the run of play, a ball out to Paul Pogba spel danger for the Blues defence. He pulled off a few step-overs and played in a peach of a cross which Ander Herrera strode in from behind Marcos Alonso and tucked in to make it 1-0 to the away side.

As the half wore on, Chelsea enjoyed more of the ball but they were undone once again, on the brink of half-time. A quick move from United saw the ball find Marcus Rashford on the right flank, with Alonso nowhere to be found.

He played in a brilliant cross past David Luiz and Paul Pogba leapt in between Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azpilicueta to head the ball down towards goal. It was at a good height for Kepa to save but his touch wasn’t strong enough and suddenly, it was 2-0 to the Red Devils going into half-time.

The second half began in the same pattern as the first and Chelsea dominated possession yet again. In the early minutes of the second period, they controlled the play but were unable to create any chances of real meaning for new striker Gonzalo Higuain.

Although they weren’t threatened by United anymore, having all of the ball accounted to nothing. Maurizio Sarri responded by throwing on Willian in place of Pedro on the right flank. This brought some life into a stagnating flank but without an end product.

It was slowly becoming clear that Chelsea wouldn’t be able to break this United defence down with their toothless and rather boring attacking play.
