Watford would be making yet another bargain by signing this £18m star and Gracia must get him

Watford opinion: The Hornets should make a move for Gaston Pereiro

According to the Watford Observer, Watford are very interested in bringing Eredivisie star Gaston Pereiro to the Premier League. The Hornets are looking for another midfielder and believe that the 24-year-old is just the attacking outlet they need.

Currently plying his trade in Netherland with Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven, the Uruguayan has been in great form. He finished the season with 10 goals and 6 assists, making just 27 appearances in the league and missing seven games towards the end of the season.

Yet that didn’t seem to affect the 24-year-old, with him either scoring goals or assisting at will. That has always been the case, with Gaston Pereiro averaging an impressive 10 goals a season since his move. It’s only over the last few years that he’s started creating more with 8 and 6 assists in his last two seasons.

That alone shows a marked improvement in the midfielder, with him also improving his defensive contributions, which suggests a marked improvement across the board. Yet, what makes him a great move for Watford, over and above his creative work is his contract.

At the moment, Pereiro has just a year left on his current deal with PSV and that gives the Hornets a lot of room to negotiate.

The report from the Observer further adds that while he might be available at a reasonable price, the 24-year-old’s reported transfer fee is around £18 million. A tad expensive for sure but it’s one well worth the money.

With Roberto Pereyra heavily linked with a move away, Ken Sema and Issa Success struggling to do much on the ball and Tom Cleverley ageing, the Hornets need new faces. Gaston Pereiro’s versatility means that he can not only play as a number 10 but also out wide on either side.

Not to mention, his technical skill does mean that an experiment as a potential central midfielder is also possible. Whether or not he’ll do well there, that is another question altogether but it’s an experiment that does have a rather high probability of success.

Yet either way, Gaston Pereiro would be arguably much much better than Roberto Pereyra has been. And with time, he could even become a fan favourite.

Conclusion

Watford needs a few reinforcements to help them move forward next season as the club have the talent to not just survive but thrive in the Premier League.

However, to do that, they need a few additions here and there, which is just where Gaston Pereiro enters. The 24-year-old will be able to effectively replace Roberto Pereyra and maybe even do much more.
