Well done Rodgers – Leicester offering their promising 21-year-old starlet a new deal is a step in the right direction

Leicester City opinion: The Foxes should offer Harvey Barnes a new deal

According to Sky Sports, Leicester City have given Harvey Barnes a new five-year deal. That would see the 21-year-old tied to the club until 2024 and that’s a great move by the club. This comes just 11 months after a four-year contract that Barnes did sign with the club.

Given his performances over the last six months though, this seems like a step to tie up any loose ends. The 21-year-old took to the Premier League wonderfully, eventually finishing his season with 16 appearances to his name, although he only contributed to 3 goals.

However, that was more than what Rachid Ghezzal managed to do throughout the entire season. And it’s one of the reasons that the club actually brought him back from his loan spell.

However, his sheer desire and never say die attitude emphasised just what Brendan Rodgers was looking for at his new club. It effectively changed the course of their season, with Leicester City losing just three games under Rodgers.

This includes a Vincent Kompany stunner and losses against Newcastle United and Watford.

Yet, Barnes was never dropped by the club, with the 21-year-old missing just one game after returning from his loan spell. It proved to be the difference-maker and with a full season ahead of him, he can probably repeat the feat.

However, to do that, Leicester City have to continue building on and that may be easier said than done. They are forming an identity under Brendan Rodgers, something that the club has failed to do since firing Claudio Ranieri.

But Rodgers in his rather short tenure so far, has worked wonders. He’s even somehow managed to even get Jamie Vardy to flourish. The retired English international struggled under Claude Puel, but that changed under Rodgers.

Instead, Vardy managed to net 10 goals in 11 appearances, effectively changing the course of his career and even Leicester City’s final position. And while they will have to eventually replace the ageing striker, right now alongside Harvey Barnes and Demarai Gray, Vardy is flourishing.

But things need to change and by giving Barnes a new and improved deal, Leicester City are proving that they’re moving in the right direction.

Conclusion

Leicester City needs to start changing things and while last summer proved that the Foxes have a lot of goods left in them, they have to continue this season in the same style.

By giving Harvey Barnes a new deal, the Foxes are proving that they are moving in the right direction and more importantly, rewarding a player who performed well.
