“Well played”, “Give him a five-year contract”: Some Leicester fans react to this star’s displays vs Newcastle + Match Report

Newcastle United v Leicester City Report: Leicester City Report

Leicester City moved into the next round of the Carabao Cup following their penalty shootout win over Newcastle United at St.James’ Park.

Jamie Vardy scored the decisive penalty for the Foxes, before which Kasper Schmeichel made two saves from Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden to turn the shootout in his team’s favour.

Coming back to the game in normal time, James Maddison scored in the first half to give the away side the lead, but Newcastle came back into after the break and equalised through Yoshinori Muto.

Brendan Rodgers exhibited his ambition of going far into this competition by fielding a strong first-choice XI. On the contrary, Steve Bruce made seven changes to his side that shocked Tottenham on Sunday.

The Magpies were content to sit back and soak up the pressure. As a result of that, Leicester struggled to really create a lot of clear-cut chances.

But, in the 34th minute, Maddison curled in a free-kick from 25-yards out, that took a wicked nick off Matt Ritchie before wrong-footing Karl Darlow and going into the back of the net.

Newcastle were much more positive in the second half and they were basically forced to do that. The result of that was an equaliser in the 53rd minute through Muto, who reacted quickest to slot home from six yards after Jetro Willems was fouled in the box by Ricardo Pereira.

After that, neither side looked likely to find a winner and the game went onto the penalties.

Schmeichel saved two of the four Newcastle penalties, allowing Vardy to net the decisive spot-kick.
