West Brom offloading their £15m outcast in January would be a win-win for all parties

Why West Brom should sell Oliver Burke in the summer

Oliver Burke, 22, has made just 20 appearances for West Brom since joining the club for £15million in August 2017 from RB Leipzig. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Celtic and is now enjoying a temporary stint with Alaves in La Liga.

The Scottish winger has played nine La Liga games at Alaves so far, assisting once. And Burke admits he still has to prove himself to potential future employers, with his deal at the Hawthorns running down.

Burke is a good player and he’s obviously got a lot of potential but things just haven’t worked out for him since he made the move to West Brom a couple of years ago.

The Scotland international has scored one goal in 24 appearances for the Baggies, but has made just two starts for the club and spent the second half of last season on loan at Celtic.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a decent start at Celtic, initially playing as a centre-forward. As the season progressed, his impact diminished and he managed just 4 goals and 3 assists in 19 games across all competitions.

At Alaves, he has been mostly used as a substitute for the last 20 or 30 minutes of games. He’s only started twice. Burke has been decent in the La Liga and while it’s fair to say he hasn’t excelled, he hasn’t disappointed either. He’s shown flashes of his quality, something similar to what he did in his loan spell at Celtic.

As Burke is doing well in La Liga, West Brom should look to offload him at the end of the season. Slaven Bilic has done a fantastic job since taking over the reins at the club, with the Baggies currently sitting at the top of the Championship table.

Verdict

At the age of 22, Burke wants to play regularly and it remains to be seen whether he has a future at the club under Bilic. Nevertheless, having not lived up to the expectations of the Hawthorns faithful, it would be wise for West Brom to sell the Scotsman and recoup some of the £15million they spent on him two years ago.
