West Ham beating Crystal Palace to sign this experienced French star would make them rock-solid in the middle

West Ham opinion: Why the Hammers should go all out to sign Yann M’Vila

According to a report from Sunderland Echo, West Ham are one of the clubs interested in signing Saint-Etienne midfielder Yann M’Vila.

The Frenchman, 29, joined Saint-Etienne a year ago and played a key role as the club enjoyed a successful season in the French top-flight, achieving Europa League qualification. Despite the club set to play in Europe this term, the midfielder is believed to be willing to consider one last big move in his career.

Yann M’Vila has never hidden the fact that he would have liked to remain in the Premier League since he left Sunderland in 2016. The report claims Crystal Palace and Fenerbahce are also lining up a move for the midfielder, who has three years left on his contract with Les Verts.

West Ham are on the lookout for a central midfielder following the departure of Pedro Obiang to Sassuolo. That has left Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini a little light in the central midfield department.

The likes of Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez had spent the majority of the last campaign on the sidelines and while the duo has been heavily involved in the club’s pre-season, Pellegrini simply cannot rely on the two.

Meanwhile, skipper Mark Noble is on the wrong side of 30 and isn’t suited to the pressing system that Pellegrini has deployed at West Ham.

Declan Rice was one of the standout performers for the East Londoners last term, becoming a regular fixture in Pellegrini’s starting XI. The 20-year-old will have a bigger role to play this time around but he’ll need a reliable partner alongside him in central midfield.

That player can be Yann M’Vila and thus, West Ham must beat the likes of Crystal Palace and Fenerbahce to the signing of the Frenchman.

M’Vila has proven to be a solid defensive midfielder in his career and can provide energy and tenacity in the middle of the park. This coupled with his immense technical quality and ability to drive with the ball could enhance West Ham’s overall quality in the midfield.

Besides, the Frenchman could add the much-needed physicality and aggression in Pellegrini’s side, potentially forming a strong partnership with Rice in the engine room.

Verdict

M’Vila’s vast experience in top-flight European football could be valuable for West Ham. This is especially true considering the 29-year-old has already played in the Premier League before with Sunderland.

Speaking of the Premier League, the former France international’s all-action style of play will make him an ideal fit for the physically demanding nature of English football.
