West Ham must push hard and sign £35m-rated goal machine this summer – could be a perfect target man

Why West Ham United must renew their interest in signing Maxi Gomez

According to Evening Standard, Premier League club West Ham United‘s £27m bid for Uruguayan striker Maxi Gomez has been rejected by Celta Vigo. Manager Manuel Pellegrini is in the market for a new striker as he seeks to build a formidable squad for the upcoming season.

Meanwhile, La Liga club Celta Vigo are holding out for a price of around £35million for the striker who scored 17 goals in 36 league appearances last year. Pellegrini needs to add more physicality to his forward line, and with Andy Carroll not fit, Gomez would be a perfect fit.

Hence, the east London club must make an improved bid in order to snap him before the 9th of August.

Player Analysis – Maxi Gomez

Age – 21

Main Position – Centre-Forward

Gomez’ height (186cm) allows him to dominate the centre-backs aerially and win long balls to provide the knock-downs for midfield runners. The 21-year-old has an aerial duel success rate of 2.5 per game, which also makes him a dangerous customer to deal with during set-piece situations.

Maxi Gomez

He netted 17 goals last season, which epitomises his ruthlessness in front of goal if given a chance. Gomez is the kind of striker who can be a nuisance to the defenders and allow diminutive players to run the show around him. The likes of Marco Arnautovic, Jack Wilshere and Felipe Anderson will love to play around a guy who can be a focal point.

Moreover, the Uruguayan is a lethal finisher himself, so West Ham will get a player who can make others play well and also score goals when needed.

Verdict

The logic behind as to why Pellegrini’s interest in Gomez is quite clear. The Chilean is after a “target man” striker who can do multiple jobs for him at various points in the game. Hence, West Ham must renew their interest in the player and make an improved bid to eventually get him over the line at London Stadium.

For the Uruguayan, if and when he arrives in the Premier League, it will be a perfect opportunity for him to showcase his talent on the bigger stage.
