West Ham signing this experienced free agent to enhance attacking unit would be a shrewd move

West Ham Opinion: Why the Hammers must snap up Emmanuel Adebayor?

According to a report from The Sun, Emmanuel Adebayor is in line for a surprise return to the Premier League, with the likes West Ham, Watford and Sheffield United interested in snapping up the free agent.

The 35-year-old forward had his contract at İstanbul Basaksehir terminated by mutual consent last month. He has not played a full 90 minutes since January and only managed five goals in 19 games for the Turkish side as Basaksehir lost out to Galatasaray in Super Lig title race by two points.

The report adds Celtic are also in for Adebayor, while a couple of Serie A clubs are in the running for his signature as well

Sheffield United are looking for a player with Premier League pedigree after sealing promotion from the Championship, whilst Watford are looking for depth to support Troy Deeney and Andre Gray.

West Ham may have signed Sebastien Haller but they need much more than him after losing three strikers this summer. Hence, the Hammers must do everything possible to snap up free agent Adebayor.

West Ham have released Andy Carroll and sold Lucas Perez to Spanish club Alaves. They have brought Sebastien Haller from Eintracht Frankfurt as a direct replacement for Marko Arnautovic, who was sold to Shanghai SIPG after demanding a move away from the club for the second time in six months.

Manuel Pellegrini has very limited options up front, despite the addition of Haller. Javier Hernandez isn’t the force he once was in his prime and cannot be relied upon to regularly supply goals. Thus, it makes a lot of sense for the Hammers to sign Adebayor.

The Togo international is past his prime, but he can certainly do a good job in the Premier League and be an asset for the east London outfit. The striker is known for his movement in and around the box and aerial ability. Adebayor is very strong in the air and is an asset to have during set-pieces.

There is no doubt that the former Arsenal and Tottenham hit-man will be a top addition to the West Ham squad who are desperately looking to bolster their attacking options.

Verdict

Adebayor’s experience in big games would be instrumental in West Ham’s quest to break into the top six next season. So, he’s definitely worth a punt.
