West Ham’s goalscoring woes would come to an end if they sign this explosive 21-year-old hitman – Here’s why

Why Alexis Claude Maurice would a smart signing for West Ham

According to a report from the Metro, West Ham are interested in signing FC Lorient striker Alexis Claude-Maurice this summer.

Alexis Claude-Maurice, 21, was outstanding in Ligue 2 last season, scoring 14 goals and contributing four assists in 35 league games. He is a rising talent from FC Lorient and his dazzling performances in Ligue 2 last season have attracted a lot of interest from top clubs, including West Ham.

Manuel Pellegrini is looking to assemble a squad capable of finishing higher than last season’s 10th place in the Premier League. The Hammers have spent big this summer, splashing out on the likes of Pablo Fornals and Sebastien Haller.

It could be argued that the Hammers need another promising attacker to complete their squad ahead of next week’s transfer deadline. Haller will undoubtedly be West Ham’s first-choice striker this season, but he will need stiff competition if he is to play to the best of his ability.

Javier Hernandez has slowed down in recent years and wouldn’t truly compete with Haller, week in and week out.

Other than Hernandez, Pellegrini has the versatile Michail Antonio but there are question marks as to whether he can provide Haller with that. Claude-Maurice looks to be exactly the kind of player who could be perfectly suited to the Hammers.

He is a left-winger by trade but can also play on the left of midfield three or through the middle and influence games. The 21-year-old is incredibly quick, agile and dynamic and he would offer West Ham a real threat in behind.

The Frenchman would add width and pace down the wide areas, something which was expected out of Andriy Yarmolenko, but the Ukrainian’s age and rotten injury record suggest he will not be at the London Stadium long-term.

If West Ham fail to add another prolific, versatile forward to their ranks this summer then they will be set for a very tough term.

Claude-Maurice is a hugely talented young player and he could prove to be a solid investment for the future. He seems to possess the right attributes needed to succeed in England.

Verdict

Pellegrini could do with a player of the 21-year-old’s calibre and there is still time left for a deal to materialise. And if the money is there, going all out for him before next week’s deadline seems like a no-brainer for the Hammers.
