Wolves 2-0 Bournemouth: Match report + Best reactions from fans

Raul Jimenez and Ivan Cavaleiro scored as Wolverhampton Wanderers defeated Bournemouth 2-0 at the Molineux on Saturday. The victory — Wolves’ third in a row — moved them to 7th in the standings with 25 points, one shy of Manchester United.

Despite Wolves starting the game on the front foot, it was the visitors who had the first chance of the game when Josh King escaped the offside trap and found himself one-on-one with Rui Patricio. However, Conor Coady made a fantastic block to deny King a clear chance to give Bournemouth an early lead.

Bournemouth kept up the pressure on Wolverhampton Wanderers, but the hosts drew first blood. The Cherries’ attempts to play out from the back backfired as Wolves capitalized on Charlie Daniels’ sloppy pass.

A stray pass from Daniels saw Jota pick up the ball in the Bournemouth half before making a powerful driving run past Nathan Ake into the box. The Portuguese fired a low shot across the box past all the Bournemouth defenders and straight to the feet of Raul Jimenez, who fired home past Asmir Begovic to give Wolves the lead after 12 minutes.

Bournemouth tried their best to level the score and had a chance after 20 minutes but Junior Stanislas fired a shot well over the crossbar from 25 yards out. Wolverhampton Wanderers had a great chance midway through the first half to double their advantage, as Jimenez tried a through pass to Morgan Gibbs-White, but as the ball came back to his feet, he tried an ambitious drive which flew over the bar.

And just before the half-time, another chance fell to Wolves. Gibbs-White played to Jimenez who released Jota through on goal with a fantastic pass. But Jota wrestled with Steve Cook to get the ball but was forcefully shoulder-barged by the Bournemouth defender. The referee waved away appeals of a free-kick—despite Jota being forced off injured.

The second half started with the rains getting heavier. Ruben Neves hit a deflected shot wide before Jimenez had his shot blocked. Bournemouth were very close from levelling the matters when Stanislas bent a vicious 20-yard free-kick onto the top of the crossbar before Patricio kept out Jefferson Lerma’s thunderous long-range drive.

Nuno brought Ivan Cavaleiro for Jimenez, and it was the Portuguese forward who sealed all three points for Wolves in added time. Cavaleiro broke forward, exchanged passes with Helder Costa and found himself clean through with only the keeper to beat. He calmly slotted his shot past the onrushing Begovic to leave the Molineux bouncing.
