Liverpool 4-0 Newcastle United: Reds continue their march at the top
Liverpool continued their charge in the league with a routine 4-0 win over Newcastle United at Anfield on Boxing Day. Dejan Lovren, Mohamed Salah, Xherdan Shaqiri and Fabinho came up with the goals for the Reds as they extended their gap to six points at the top of the table.
Lovren opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a fantastic attempt on the half volley following a second phase in the corner. The Magpies then managed to keep Jurgen Klopp’s men quiet until half-time.
The home side did come out of the blocks after the break. Salah won the penalty and scored it very early on in the second period to virtually seal three points. Then 11 minutes from time, Trent Alexander-Arnold set up Shaqiri for an easy tap-in from six yards. Fabinho scored his first goal for the Reds with a header from six yards out.
Klopp’s men never really had to come out of second gear to beat this Newcastle team, who rarely threatened to score a goal. Rafa Benitez rested his main striker Salomon Rondon and didn’t bring him on as well. Hence, it was evident that the Spaniard was saving his main man for his team’s next game against Watford at Vicarage Road.
This result leaves Liverpool at the top, six points clear of second-placed Tottenham Hotspur. Defending champions Manchester City are seven points behind after their loss at Leicester City.
Here’s how Liverpool fans reacted to this win which took them six points clear at the top of the table:
We refuse to be carried away and will remain humble and speak after March. Opinion polls and early leads can be miss leading. To borrow from klopp. ” we want to enjoy football and only mancity and Tottenham are clear favourites to win”..Up the reds
