What Does The Arrival Of This £17m English Defender Bring To Leicester?

Harry Maguire

What Does Harry Maguire Add To Leicester’s Defence

Hull City defender Harry Maguire became Leicester City’s first signing this summer after the Foxes shelled out £17m for the 24-year-old English defender. The former Premier League champions have certainly made a smart move by signing Maguire, as the young English defender was more than impressive in his two seasons with Hull.

His performances in the Championship had already earned him a lot of praise from the pundits but his true recognition came after impressing for Hull City in the Premier League last season. He captained the Tigers towards the end of the season but could not help them avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Let’s take a look what Harry Maguire can offer to Leicester City.

Leicester Can Build The Backline Around Him

A five-year contract from the former League champions shows what Leicester City have in plan for Maguire and how much they rate his ability. It certainly suggests that Craig Shakespeare is planning on building the backline around the 24-year-old and possibly give him the captain’s armband in the future.

Leadership Quality

The Foxes have not just brought in an impressive defender but also a leader and a personality that fits into the squad at the King Power Stadium. Team spirit and passion certainly played a big part in Leicester City’s recent success and Maguire possesses both. Having already taken the captain’s armband at Hull, Maguire displayed his leadership qualities despite his young age. With Maguire in the squad, Leicester City will be hoping to build on from the fairly impressive stint they had in the Champions League last season.

All-Round Solidarity

Leicester City failed to replicate the 2015/16 season’s success despite bringing in some big name players last season like Ahmed Musa and Islam Slimani. Both players barely managed to get going last season and already look like being on the way out of the club. But with the signing of Maguire, the Foxes have shown intent and ambition. It now looks like they are heading in the right path under the management of Craig Shakespeare.

With a couple of more signings including a striker, a playmaker and a right-back, Leicester City could be looking at a much better Premier League campaign. The experience of Jamie Vardy, Albrighton, and Danny Drinkwater can motivate the newcomers as well as the old ones to try and emulate the magic they created a year before.
