Who Is This French Midfielder Tottenham Are Close To Signing? Everything You Need To Know

Vincent Marcel

Vincent Marcel – Scout Report

Tottenham Hotspur are close to completing their first transfer of the summer with OGC Nice’s Vincent Marcel poised to join the North Londoners.

French outlet Foot Mercato claims that Spurs have offered the winger a five-year contract which the player has agreed in principle and a move is imminent. The Sun had reported Tottenham’s interest in the 20-year old over the weekend, claiming that the club discovered him when they were watching right-back Ricardo Pereira last season.

Marcel just featured on 10 occasions for Nice last season and did not score or assist any goals. But his performances were seemingly enough to convince Tottenham to make a move. With the player nearing a transfer, let’s take a look at who exactly Vincent Marcel is and what will he be bringing to the table.

Footballing Background

Born in Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe, on 9 April 1997, Marcel kicked off his footballing journey with local club La Gauloise de Basse-Terre in 2007. But he departed two years later to join the Le Havre academy in 2009. Having progressed in the youth ranks at Le Havre, the young starlet decided to move down south to Nice in the summer of 2015.

Having spent his first season with the club as part of the Nice II team for whom he has made 24 appearances till date with 2 goals, Marcel was moved to the senior team ahead of the 2016/17 season. Manager Lucien Favre handed him his debut for the senior team on August 14, 2016 in a 1-0 win against Stade Rennais FC in the Ligue1. Since then, he has gone on to make 5 more appearances in the Ligue1 and has clocked 2 appearances in the UEFA Europa League as well.

Marcel has been capped at the youth level for the France national team – thrice for the U-19 side and twice for the U-20 side. He is yet to open his goal-scoring account on the international stages.

Style of Play

Primarily a right-sided winger, Marcel can play anywhere in the attacking third of the pitch, be it in a central attacking midfielder role, out on the left flank or as a centre-forward.

His speed and dribbling ability have caught the eyes of many and has drawn comparisons to another French starlet – Ousmane Dembele of Borussia Dortmund. Marcel may not have been able to produce prolific goal-scoring and assists returns like Dembele, but his displays for both club and country have been impressive. With pace in abundance and strong skills on the ball to go with that, along with a strong range of distribution, he looks like a good prospect.

What Does The Future Hold?

Marcel still has 4 years left on his deal with Nice, but there has been interest from French side Nantes as well, along with Tottenham. However, with reports claiming that personal terms have been agreed with the North London outfit, a move is just a matter of formality.

However, Tottenham need to be wary of getting their hands on another potential dud, after having their hands burnt with the transfers of Clinton N’Jie and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou in the past.
