Man United’s £60k-a-week deal for club talisman is absolutely the right step for the future

Why a new deal for McTominay is a right step by Manchester United

The Sun confirms that Manchester United are planning to hand Scott McTominay a new deal after an impressive start to the season.

The new double-your-money deal is said to be worth £60,000-a-week for the youngster. McTominay came through the ranks of United’s academy system and he recently signed a contract in January that would keep him until 2023. Now it is understood that the Old Trafford hierarchy are extending his contract until 2025 and a further one year if necessary.

Jose Mourinho handed McTominay his debut against Arsenal in 2017 and since then, the Scotsman has gone on to play 65 games for the first-team. Though he did not do well initially, the academy prospect has become a mainstay in United’s midfield this season.

An injury to star midfielder Paul Pogba at the start of the season promoted Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to start with the youngster, who has gone on to claim the spot for himself and the manager feels like he cannot be dropped from the starting XI at all.

The 23-year-old was impressive in Manchester United’s win against Tottenham and Manchester City last week and has received recognition for his game. And United are willing to reward him for his development and astonishing performances.

United’s midfield of McTominay, Fred and Andreas Pereira have done well recently and have seen their team rise to 5th position in the league standings, although Pereira has not matched the performances of the former two.

McTominay has been given a role under Solskjaer where he can move forward and also trackback in defensive duties. The midfielder has done justice to his inclusion in the team and has already made 18 appearances so far this term, in which he has scored thrice and assisted once.

The Scottish international’s development into a box-to-box midfielder has been outstanding. His impressive display in the 3-1 thrashing of Paris Saint-Germain last year in the Champions League was eye-catching and has continued with the same this season.

Playing the anchoring role, McTominay has been dubbed as the new Darren Fletcher due to his nationality and skill set. He has added a new dimension to his game over the past few months and looks ready to play a big role in the future of the club.

Under Solskjaer, McTominay has become one of the first names on the sheet and has proved to be the difference for the team. He seems to be everywhere on the pitch and is also the focal point in starting a counter-attack, which United’s forwards enjoyed displaying against Manchester City last weekend.

McTominay has been doing the job expected from Pogba and being a Manchester United player since his youth, the youngster has played for the badge and if he continues to perform at the highest level, he can go on to be one of the best modern midfielders.

Therefore, it is a good decision by Manchester United to secure his future at Old Trafford with a new deal and can expect him to deliver consistently.
