If the transfer ban is lifted, Chelsea should not hesitate to sign this 10-goal Ajax star in January – Agreed?

Why Ajax star David Neres would be a fantastic signing for Chelsea

Back in May, a report from the Metro had claimed that Chelsea were interested in signing Ajax forward David Neres.

However, no deal materialised as the Blues were under a two-window transfer embargo imposed by FIFA for breaching regulations relating to the transfer of underage players.

David Neres, 22, impressed amid Ajax’s run to the Champions League semi-finals and the Eredivisie title. He hit 10 goals in 42 matches in Ajax’s fine campaign, catching the attention of a host of top clubs when scoring in the 4-1 Champions League win at Real Madrid in March.

While Ajax were apparently ready to sell the Brazilian winger in the summer, there was no mention of a concrete offer from any clubs. As a result, the 22-year-old stayed put at Ajax. However, Chelsea must rekindle their interest in Neres, but any move for the Ajax star in January would depend solely on the verdict of the club’s appeal over the transfer ban.

The departure of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid has been mightily felt by new manager Frank Lampard, whose young squad has seen a lot of ups and downs in the opening few weeks of the new campaign.

The Blues showed a lot of spirit in their recent 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at Stamford Bridge and had they been clinical in front of goal, Lampard’s side could have even won the contest on Sunday, who knows?

Nevertheless, Chelsea are in dire need of some reinforcements and Lampard should prioritise signing a strong central defender in the upcoming transfer window. Apart from a centre-back, he must also look to bolster his attacking ranks.

Although Chelsea completed the signing of Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund in January, both Pedro and Willian have entered the final 12-months of their contracts while Callum Hudson-Odoi has missed the start of the new season due to an Achilles injury.

It depends whether the Chelsea board would offer both Pedro and Willian extensions and even if they do, the duo are in their 30s and would need replacing sooner rather than later.

David Neres could replace either one of Willian or Pedro at Stamford Bridge. The Brazilian international can play on either side of the wing and is capable of plying his trade through the middle as well. He is known for his pace and dribbling skills that allows him to provide a threat on the counter.

Besides, the former Sao Paulo man is also adept in taking on defenders, which becomes useful when penetrating the opposition. All in all, Neres would definitely bolster Chelsea’s attacking ranks as well as add competition across Lampard’s squad.

Verdict

The fast-paced and robust nature of the Premier League could see Neres take some time to adapt to English football but after performing well in the Champions League last season, Chelsea shouldn’t hesitate to take a punt on him.

In fact, the Blues pounce on the opportunity to snap him up once they have their transfer ban lifted.
