Top-four spot on the cards? – Tottenham signing this searing 24-year-old forward would be just the push they need

Why Angel Correa could be a smart signing for Tottenham

Back in July, the Daily Star had claimed Tottenham were interested in signing Atletico Madrid forward Angel Correa. However, no deal materialised.

Angel Correa, 24, who came close to joining AC Milan in the summer, joined Atletico Madrid from San Lorenzo back in 2015. He may have made over 180 appearances for Atletico and been a crucial cog of Diego Simeone’s attack, but after starting just 20 games in La Liga last season, he was keen on leaving the club.

Things haven’t changed much for the 24-year-old this season, with the Argentinean starting just two of the seven La Liga games as of now. With Correa struggling for regular starting opportunities, Tottenham must revive their interest and attempt to sign him in January.

Tottenham Hotspur are set to lose midfielder Christian Eriksen either in January or next summer which could leave a spot in the squad open for an attacker.

Eriksen and Dele Alli have been well out of form for some while now, with the former expressing at the start of the season that he wanted to leave the club as his contract is due to expire at the end of the season.

The onus of scoring goals and winning games for Spurs has once again fallen on Harry Kane, who scored in the 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield. But that shouldn’t be the case as Kane, who has been unfortunate with injuries over the last couple of seasons, needs sufficient breaks during a campaign.

With back-up strikers, Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente, both departing in the summer, more attacking options are certainly needed if Spurs are to get into Premier League’s top-four and progress through to the knockout stages of the Champions League. Thus, plotting a January swoop for Angel Correa makes sense.

Correa is primarily a striker but has been used on either flank or behind the main man by Simeone, and he has done well in each of the roles he has been asked to fill. His versatility combined with his innate abilities makes him a top talent.

The Rosario-born forward was directly involved in nine goals in 49 games across all competitions for Atletico last season and regularly made an impact off the bench.

The Argentine has a tremendous work-rate and that combined with his pace, energy, movement and skill-set would make him fit in perfectly with the typical hustle and bustle of Premier League football.

The 24-year-old could be a dream to work with for Pochettino, as he could fit nicely into his squad and also act as a perfect back-up for Kane.

Verdict

Correa could prove to be a shrewd addition for Spurs, which might give them the much-needed boost to get into the top four this season.
