Why Arsenal must offer a contract extension to their £90,000-a-week star and hold on to him

Why Arsenal Must Offer Jack Wilshere A Contract Extension

Jack Wilshere has spent a good majority of his career struggling with his injuries but the midfielder made a miraculous comeback this season and has been playing quite regularly for Arsenal since then.

However, that has not stopped the speculations about his long-term future and with the World Cup coming up, it does seem like a dicey situation for the player. As per a report from BBC, club manager Arsene Wenger had told him to leave the club last summer.

However, Wilshere chose to stay back and considering the lack of power in the midfield area for the Gunners, the Frenchman must thank his lucky stars for that. But with his contract set to come to an end this summer, it remains to be seen if Arsenal offer him a new contract or just let him leave as a free agent.

The latter would obviously be a terrible situation since a player as committed and dedicated as Wilshere deserves a lot better. So, what should Arsenal do?

A report from The Metro had further stated that Wilshere was “furious” since Arsenal top-brass had asked him to take a pay cut. His frustration makes sense, especially after the way he has worked hard to make it back into the team and nail a spot for himself.

Also, Wilshere, who currently earns £90,000-a-week at the Emirates, is possibly the sole remainder of Arsenal’s glorious past. The likes of Reiss Nelson and Ainsley Maitland-Niles are solid up-and-coming players but Wilshere has stood the test of time at the Emirates Stadium.

Given the lack of squad depth at the club, it might be better for Arsenal to extend his contract at least for another year or two.

After all, Wilshere is a supremely talented player and it would not harm them to give him another chance solely to see if he can rediscover his previous form. His performances lately have been rather encouraging and if he can keep that up, why should Arsenal look elsewhere?

His displays might not be as flashy as many of his contemporaries but that does not diminish the kind of impact he can make on the field.

With the new season coming up, challenges will only intensify for Arsenal and to face them head-on, a player as experienced as Wilshere can prove to be resourceful. Hence, the Gunners must keep him at least for the time being and monitor his progress to truly determine if he has a future at the club or not.
