Why Arsenal signing this £65k-a-week Premier League star would be a real statement of intent

Why Arsenal should sign Anthony Martial from Manchester United

According to reports in Sky Sports, Anthony Martial has rejected Manchester United’s latest contract offer but talks continue in pursuit of an agreement. The Red Devils want the Frenchman to commit to a new long-term deal, with his current contract expiring next summer. The extension option is only available until 2020.

Martial has been in and out of the side this season, as has been the case since Jose Mourinho’s arrival in 2016. The 22-year-old scored a brace against Chelsea and also against Everton yesterday, and is in decent form of late. However, he hasn’t been a regular under the manager.

As per the report from Express, rival fans are asking their respective clubs to put in a bid for the £65k-a-week Frenchman, who certainly possesses the quality to improve any attack in the Premier League.

Out of those rival clubs, Arsenal should come to the party and sign the forward as soon as possible. Here’s why:

Arsenal’s need for a winger

The Gunners have made a good start to their life under new manager Unai Emery. They are slowly building a decent base to work on and progress to the higher echelons of the Premier League.

However, the 4-2-3-1 formation with which the manager plays must have two genuine wingers moving up and down the pitch, week in week out.

And if we look at the Arsenal squad, they lack wide attackers in their squad. Alex Iwobi is the only one who can play on either wing and cause trouble to the defenders. The likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are more comfortable through the middle, especially the former being an out and out striker.

Therefore, getting someone of the calibre of Martial could be an ideal addition to the squad. The Frenchman is a versatile player who can cause havoc playing as a winger, or as an able striker up front if required. Arsenal would get a potential game-changer and an impact player if they sign the 22-year-old.

Verdict

Martial is a talented player who needs regular game time to have an impact on the games. The uncertainty level at Manchester United is high under Mourinho, and Arsenal are just starting to settle down well under Emery.

Hence, if the Gunners go for him, it would be an ideal deal for both parties. The player could get his chance to play for a big club on a consistent basis, and the club can fill their gap in the wide attacking areas.
