Why Barcelona’s Paco Alcacer Would Be A Great Signing For Southampton

As per a report from Sky Sports, Southampton are weighing up a summer move for Barcelona star Paco Alcacer. The Saints have not endured the best of seasons this term and have struggled for a good majority of the campaign so far.

At present, they find themselves in the relegation zone and it is quite clear that they need to boost their attacking forces. Sky Sports claim that the club are likely to make a move for Alcacer if they manage to survive relegation from the top-flight this season.

If you look at the 24-year-old’s career with Barcelona so far, he won’t seem like a good choice for a side that’s struggling in the English top-flight.

However, during his two seasons in the La Liga with Valencia, Alcacer managed to score a total of 24 goals and that proves that the player can be quite lethal in the right setting. Ever since he moved to Camp Nou, Alcacer has seen a significant reduction in his game time.

With interest stemming from Southampton, Alcacer might be tempted to pack his bags and move to St. Mary’s to link up with new manager Mark Hughes. Given the situation at Southampton, a player like Alcacer could work wonders for the club.

It is indeed shocking to note that Charlie Austin is the club’s top-scorer with merely 6 goals to his name. Southampton’s lack of attacking intent and goalscorers have been harshly highlighted many a time.

Furthermore, a report from The Mirror has claimed that the Saints could be looking to offload Manolo Gabbiadini, who has been nothing short of a disappointment for the club this season. If they were to do that, Hughes will face a massive void up front and Alcacer could play a major role in helping him fill that.

Alcacer’s attacking instincts are quite strong and he is a true poacher blessed with sublime finishing skills, meaning he could be everything Southampton have lacked this season.

At the end of the day, however, it all depends on whether or not the Saints can survive in the top-flight. The situation does not look good for them and they are one of the favourites to get relegated right now. However, if they do survive, the club must go all out to secure a deal for Alcacer.
