Why Brighton must go ahead and complete a £2.5m deal for this Derby County star

Why Brighton must pursue a move for Derby County goalkeeper Scott Carson

According to a report by The Sun, Brighton & Hove Albion are interested in signing Derby County goalkeeper Scott Carson.

The Championship outfit were one of the leading contenders to secure a promotion last season but they failed to do so. With new manager Frank Lampard at the helm, the Rams appear to be in for a bright future.

However, it looks like Brighton could sneak in and lure Carson to the Premier League this summer. The report further states that the Seagulls could table an offer in the region of £2.5million, which is quite a decent amount. Carson has been nothing short of a heroic figure for Derby and one can imagine that the club wouldn’t be too happy to sell him.

The prospect of playing in the Premier League should seem tantalizing for Carson since it might be his last chance to do so. At 32 years of age, the goalkeeper certainly isn’t getting younger.

Despite spending big last summer, Derby failed to secure a promotion to the top-flight. Now, they must balance out their books and to do so, they might be forced to sell Carson. He is a proven goalkeeping veteran and selling him would generate a good amount of money for Derby.

In fact, it would also provide Lampard with some extra funds to sign additional players in the ongoing transfer window. Losing Carson will be a tough ordeal but with financial troubles in the picture, perhaps Derby should consider sanctioning a sale.

As far as Brighton are concerned, they already have Australia’s World Cup keeper Matthew Ryan as their first-choice custodian between the sticks. In addition to that, they recently signed Jason Steele for a great bargain.

That said, a deal for Carson would be a great option for Brighton, who shipped 54 goals in the previous campaign. Having finished 15th last season, the Seagulls must bolster their squad to a great extent ahead of the new term.

And signing Carson would certainly help them do that. The player has only gotten better with age and he recorded an impressive 19 clean sheets in 48 league games last season.

With Tim Krul out of the picture, Brighton could benefit by bringing Carson to the Amex Stadium. He would not only boost their depth but also provide competition for Matthew Ryan.

Hence, Brighton must definitely pursue a move for the talented shot-stopper but it remains to be seen if Derby are willing to sell.
