Why Cardiff could strike gold by signing this PL veteran in January – could be a perfect Plan B

Why Cardiff City must make a January swoop for Jermain Defoe

Cardiff City were last season’s surprise package in the Championship, finishing as the runners-up behind Wolverhampton Wanderers. However, just as expected, Cardiff have found life difficult in the Premier League.

The Bluebirds are still without a win in the first seven Premier League games and have amassed just two points till date. Only seven games are done and the unrest is clear amongst Neil Warnock and the Cardiff fans as they are expected to be in for a long season in the top-flight.

Cardiff’s defence remains their biggest problem, with Warnock’s men enduring big losses against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City in recent weeks. Although fixing the defence remains Warnock’s biggest priority, the veteran manager could do a good job by adding another striker due to his team’s lack of firepower in the attack.

The Welsh outfit strengthened their squad well over the summer and added to their front line with the signing of Bobby Reid. But they need to add another option up top in order to avoid relegation to the Championship.

Jermain Defoe

There will be few better alternatives in the January market than Jermain Defoe, who will certainly want to play regularly in the final few years of his career rather than warm the bench at Bournemouth.

Jermain Defoe, 35, had made just two Premier League appearances this season (at the time of writing), with one of those as a last-minute sub in Bournemouth’s 2-0 win against Cardiff City last month. The English striker joined the Cherries from Sunderland last summer and scored just four times in 24 appearances.

Defoe finds himself way down the pecking order this season and manager Eddie Howe has only used him from the bench. Keeping in mind the 35-year-old’s bit-part role in Bournemouth colours, Cardiff must make a move for him in January.

Definitely, Defoe has seen his best years in football but a player of his experience and quality would surely benefit Cardiff in every way. They’d get a player who is in the final stages of his career but would add some value to Warnock’s squad.

Jermain Defoe

A striker with proven pedigree and experience at the top-flight level usually proves to be a worthy proposition in the Championship. Defoe would be that sort of player for Cardiff as the 35-year-old is a natural goalscorer and will certainly add quality as well as depth to the squad.

Defoe is a proven Premier League striker and would bring freshness to Cardiff’s attack in January and give Warnock a plan B. The veteran England international would be a smart signing and Warnock must wrap up a deal as soon as the transfer window reopens.
