Why Celtic must go all out to sign on-loan Man City stopper with 15 clean sheets in 43 appearances

Why Celtic must go all out to sign Angus Gunn

As per a report from The Sun, Celtic are interested in a summer move for Manchester City goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

The 22-year-old, who is currently serving a loan spell with Championship outfit Norwich City, has quickly risen to the top and is regarded as one of the brightest goalkeeping prospects in England right now. And it comes as no surprise that the Scottish giants are keen on attempting to lure him to Celtic Park.

Son of former Aberdeen and Scotland keeper Bryan Gunn, the youngster joined Norwich on a season-long loan deal from City last summer.

Since then, he has played a pivotal role for them in goal and has been the reason behind whatever good fortunes they have enjoyed this season. In fact, given his enormous impact, I assume the Canaries would want him back on a loan deal for the next season as well but if Celtic offer big money, City might be tempted to sell him instead.

However, Daily Record has claimed that Celtic are also interested in a temporary deal since Gunn is relatively unproven at a top level for now. Wanting to sign a comparatively inexperienced player on a loan might seem like a savvy move for Celtic but given the desperate need for a new goalkeeper, is that really a wise choice for Brendan Rodgers?

While their doubts are justified, one must bear in mind that the Scottish giants are in dire need of a reliable new goalkeeper. Their regular No. 1 Craig Gordon is yet to return to match fitness after succumbing to a knee injury. Also, at 35 years of age, Gordon cannot be viewed as a long-term prospect. Meanwhile, backup keeper Dorus De Vries has put up a slew of inconsistent displays this season, raising question marks over his overall capabilities.

For now, on-loan Dundee keeper Scott Bain has been holding up the fort but his deal will expire this summer and Rodgers must look elsewhere. In a situation like this, Gunn does seem like a good choice even if they were to sign him on a permanent basis. He has maintained 15 clean sheets in 43 appearances this season and given the level of competition in the Championship this term, that is no easy feat.

Thus, signing another goalkeeper on loan is unlikely to address Celtic’s deep-lying issues at the back. If they are truly serious about signing Gunn though, they must do so on a permanent basis.
