Celtic’s defensive woes would vanish once and for all if they land this 6ft 3in giant in the summer

Celtic FC Opinion: Why the Hoops should go all out for Riccardo Brosco

According to a report from the Scottish Sun, new Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers is considering raiding his former club Celtic for Dedryck Boyata in the summer.

The Belgium centre-back, 28, is out of contact at the Parkhead at the end of the season, meaning he can move to any club on a free transfer.

Boyata has been on the books of Celtic since the summer of 2015 when he joined from Manchester City. The 28-year-old wanted to leave the club in the summer transfer window and was a subject of interest from Premier League side Fulham.

However, Celtic refused to sell him in the summer and he ended up staying at the Parkhead.

But given that Rodgers is plotting a summer swoop for Boyata, it’s high time the Hoops consider moving on from the Belgian and sign his replacement in the summer. That said, Celtic should make a move for Ascoli defender Riccardo Brosco.

Riccardo Brosco, 28, joined Ascoli from Verona last summer and has become a crucial cog of Vincenzo Vivarini’s side. The 28-year-old has been an ever-present figure in the Ascoli backline, managing four goals in 22 Serie B appearances.

Standing at 6ft 3in, Brosco is a strong, powerful and robust centre-half with excellent heading ability and aerial prowess. He is a tough tackler, plays with a lot of aggression and gives his 100% every time he is on the field. The Italian is also a leader on the pitch and at 28, he is well into his prime.

The former Pescara and Latina Calcio man isn’t exactly composed with the ball at his feet, something which managers often demand from modern-day centre-backs. But Brosco makes it up with his no-nonsense defending and ability to contribute with goals.

The Italian defender may not have set the world alight during his early years but he has certainly proven to be a late bloomer. He has proven to be one of the best defenders in the Serie B and Celtic should look to prise him away from Stadio Cino e Lillo Del Duca this summer.

Conclusion

Whoever takes over at Celtic ahead of the 2019/20 campaign should focus on rebuilding the defence.

The Hoops’ crisis at the back is a worrying sign, with Boyata set to leave at the end of this season. Filip Benkovic, on loan from Leicester City, will reunite with Rodgers at his parent club, leaving the Bhoys with Kristoffer Ajer, Jack Hendry and Jozo Simunovic as the centre-half options.

Hence, signing a defender is a no-brainer and Celtic should go all out to sign Riccardo Brosco.
