Why Celtic signing this 25-year-old League One star would be a brilliant move by Brendan Rodgers

Why Celtic must make a move for Marcus Maddison in January

According to the Birmingham Live, Peterborough star Marcus Maddison was transfer listed in the summer as the club were happy to cash in on him. But Peterborough failed to sell the 25-year-old and he has since remained with the League One side.

Marcus Maddison scored 12 times for the Posh in all competitions last season and although he hasn’t scored so far this campaign, the left-footed playmaker has three assists to his name in 11 League One games. After a slow start this season, he is back in form and is ripping apart defences in the League One.

Going by Maddison’s brilliant form lately, Scottish champions Celtic must consider signing him in January.

After a passive start to the new Scottish Premiership campaign, Celtic have started to click as a unit and are picking up points on the road.

Although the Hoops have struggled to make a mark in Europe, they have reached the finals of the Scottish League cup after defeating Hearts 3-0.

To put things into perspective, the domestic form has hardly been a concern for Brendan Rodgers but if he wishes to challenge in Europe, Celtic need to sign more players.

Rodgers has a very good squad at his disposal, arguably the best in the entire Scottish Premiership, but his team have not delivered the goods as consistently as they should.

The exit of Moussa Dembele is still felt at Parkhead as the likes of Odsonne Edouard, Leigh Griffiths and Tom Rogic have not scored goals at a constant rate.

Dembele was a goal-scoring machine for the Hoops and his departure has hit the team badly, meaning Rodgers should try getting a player who is capable of scoring and also creating goals.

In that case, Marcus Maddison would fit the bill perfectly at the Parkhead. Maddison is a very versatile footballer and can operate as a winger, an attacking midfielder and as left-back. He is one of the best players in the League One and has been playing well for Peterborough this season.

Maddison registered a staggering 23 assists and 12 goals last season which made him one of the best creative players in the league. At Celtic, he would add a different dimension to Rodgers’ attack.

Maddison is a playmaker with outstanding technical ability, and he knows how to deliver a decisive pass in the final third.

The skilful attacker can create something out of nothing and would offer huge versatility by being able to play in any position in the final third.

Furthermore, the Peterborough man would share the burden on Tom Rogic’s shoulders and help Celtic play a more fluid and dynamic brand of football under Rodgers.

There is no doubt that Maddison would be a fantastic acquisition for Celtic if Rodgers can manage to lure him to Parkhead in January.
