Why Chelsea Could Have Had A Transfer Boost In Their Pursuit Of This French Midfielder Thanks To Leicester’s New Signing

If anyone thought that Claudio Ranieri and Leicester City would be taking some time off this season, they are wrong. The Foxes already are busy in the transfer market and recently signed Nampalys Mendy from Nice.

The 24-year-old is a central defensive midfielder and has been one of the best players in Ligue 1. The French midfielder is known for his interceptions and passing in the middle of the park and isn’t the greatest at tackling but a bigger question has risen thanks to this signing, is this the end of the road for N’Golo Kante at Leicester?

Claudio Ranieri has always stated that the club could lose players but only for the right price and we had seen how close Jamie Vardy was to signing for Arsenal before he decided to stick with Leicester, especially thanks to that new contract but the Foxes had not signed any replacement for Vardy during that time.

This is not the case for Kante and Mendy as the 24-year-old can be seen as a like-for-like replacement and could very well end up starting games in the centre of the park next season with Danny Drinkwater.

While there would be doubts about the ability of Mendy to slot perfectly into the Kante role, not many would have known about Kante before he had that wonderful season for the Foxes last season and Mendy could well do the same next season.

Kante has been linked with a move to Chelsea for a while now and Antonio Conte would be looking to freshen up the midfield of the London club, which had become stale and didn’t age all that well to be honest.

Mendy’s signing would certainly be a boost for any club looking to buy Kante as the former Nice player is in the mould of the Foxes star. Chelsea and Conte would certainly be shifting to high gear to bring Kante to Stamford Bridge and it does now seem inevitable that the star midfielder would be leaving the King Power Stadium for greener pastures.

Kante would certainly add a lot of dynamism to the Chelsea midfield and as seen with the Michy Batshuayi signing, the club are willing to spend a ton of money to bring in the players that Conte does want.

It could however be a smokescreen thrown by Ranieri as well as he looks to keep hold of some of his signings and Mendy could be played in the games where Kante is given a rest, especially due to the fact that Leicester would be playing in the Champions League.

Ranieri does need a strong side to retain the Premier League crown next season but this Mendy signing does look like a deal to replace Kante and Chelsea probably should seal the deal to bring the Frenchman to Stamford Bridge next season.
