Why Chelsea Must Avoid Signing Roma’s Edin Dzeko This Summer
As per a report from GOL Digital, Edin Dzeko is edging closer to joining Chelsea this summer. At 32 years of age, Dzeko has been unstoppable for AS Roma and has been in excellent form, netting 17 goals in all competitions this campaign.
Dzeko has been brilliant for Roma since joining them and it comes as no surprise that the defending Premier League champions are harbouring an interest.
To have a player like Dzeko in the mix can instantly make an impact. He is experienced and skilful enough to drive through the toughest of opponents and he seems to be quite comfortable when it comes to scoring and creating goals.
Throughout the season, Chelsea have lacked a player like him but if they sign him this summer, Olivier Giroud could go further down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues have struggled to fill Diego Costa’s void since he left the club last summer and certainly, signing Alvaro Morata has not been the answer to their troubles.
The former Real Madrid star might have started off on the right foot but as time wore on, so did his performances. Now, it has come to a point where manager Antonio Conte has predominantly been using Eden Hazard as the central striker with the likes of Pedro and Willian on the wings.
Giroud has also played as the striker on certain occasions but if Dzeko joins the club, the Frenchman might have to be content with making substitute appearances.
On one hand, Giroud had thrived in the role of an impact sub at Arsenal and could play a similar role for Chelsea as well. But he would be back to square one since his game time is likely to reduce. Moreover, he was brought in by the club for the same purpose why they are targetting Dzeko now.
Also, Michy Batshuayi will return this summer and after a successful loan spell with Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, he deserves to be in contention for a place in the first-team. He has played well for Dortmund and has netted some impressive goals as well.
Given Morata’s lack of impact, it is understandable if the London-based outfit splurge the cash on a first-choice striker but if their objective is to find a backup striker, it might be better for them to rely on the options they already have at their disposal.
