Why Chelsea must hijack Man City’s £43m move to land this top-class partner for N’Golo Kante

Why Chelsea must beat Manchester City to sign Jorginho

According to reports, Premier League champions Manchester City have moved a step closer to landing Jorginho with Napoli finally landing his replacement. The Serie A club have completed a £26million deal to bring Fabian Ruiz from Real Betis.

The completion of Ruiz’s transfer should accelerate Jorginho’s move to City, with Napoli having already omitted the Italy international from their 23-man squad for a pre-season training camp earlier this week.

Jorginho’s agent Joao Santos last week suggested a deal could be agreed between City and Napoli for the player’s transfer at any moment.

Now that Jorginho is very close to joining City for £43m, should Chelsea hijack the deal in the 11th hour?

As the saga surrounding Maurizio Sarri’s impending move to become Chelsea manager continues, there are reports in Italy that suggest the Blues could make a sensational late move for Jorginho to secure the services of Sarri.

Jorginho

In the last four years, the Blues have won the league twice and finished outside the top-4 twice. There has been no stability at all, with manager Antonio Conte set to be axed after guiding Chelsea to the title in his debut season.

The Londoners need to invest big this summer and that can be the only way for them to challenge for the title next season. However, Chelsea can’t get their transfer campaign started until Sarri’s problem is resolved.

But on the other hand, if Jorginho’s transfer unlocks the Sarri impasse, then Roman Abramovich, the owner of Chelsea must prioritise plucking away the midfielder from City’s noses.

Jorginho was a vital cog in Sarri’s system at Napoli where the game ran through the midfielder. Alongside Jorginho, Allan did the dirty job of shielding Napoli’s backline. Chelsea already have N’Golo Kante, one of the best defensive midfielders in world football, to do the job of Allan should Jorginho move to Stamford Bridge.

A midfield consisting of Kante and Jorginho appears to be an exciting prospect as they can dominate the middle of the park and create a solid platform for the attacking players to flourish.

Jorginho

Jorginho played as the regista in a 3-man midfield at Napoli, surrounded by Allan and Marek Hamsik. It’s Jorginho’s technique, vision and passing which did set the tempo for Napoli’s high-octane system under Sarri which had the rest of Europe in awe.

Besides his technical skills, it’s his intelligence and ability to read the game that allows him to make the best decision in any given situation. The Blues already have one of the world’s best midfielders and pairing him up with a great deep-lying midfielder who complements Kante is an absolute must this summer.

With Cesc Fabregas on the decline and Tiemoue Bakayoko yet to fully find his feet at Stamford Bridge, a move for Jorginho is a no-brainer. And if the Italy international’s move helps in landing Sarri, then Chelsea shouldn’t waste further time in getting a deal done.
