Why Chelsea have to retain Andreas Christensen amidst Barcelona interest
Chelsea are one of the world’s best football clubs and are one of the few clubs who are not afraid to show the depth of their wallet.
While Frank Lampard and John Terry will forever remain the symbols of the club, most of the other legends to have played for Chelsea before were bought using big money. The last time an academy player made it to the first eleven is not even in the fans’ nearest memories.
Andreas Christensen is a Chelsea academy product through and through. He has represented Chelsea at all levels and has turned into a beast of a centre-half. Very similar to Terry in the movements he makes, he is a large figure to deal with in the box, making various important blocks while also being able to make spectacular last-ditch challenges.
He is more than capable of stepping up in the big games. Over 6 feet tall, he is also a threat going forward. Like Terry, he fancies himself in the box from set-pieces.
While Chelsea have acquired a quality long-term player in Rudiger, David Luiz is ageing and while he does tend to make some mistakes, he has been an excellent servant for this football club. When he’s not able to deal with the pace of the premier league anymore, Christensen would be the perfect candidate to step into that position.
With Ethan Ampadu in the mix, the Chelsea central defence looks more than secure for the near future.
While moving to Spain is a dream for many, Christensen is one player who grew up as a Chelsea youth. His hopes were made possible because of the belief that the club have placed in him.
His loan spell at Borrusia Monchengladbach was also highly successful, which urged Antonio Conte to not send him out on loan for another season.
While it can be argued that Chelsea would be able to make a massive profit by selling him to European giants Barcelona, Sarri seems to have identified him as one for the future.
In the blue of Chelsea, he has played various important fixtures and always looks calm and assured on the pitch. With the arrival of a new top quality goalkeeper, Chelsea should do everything in their power to keep this young Dane at the club as he could, for all we know, be Chelsea’s next John Terry.
