Chelsea would be foolish to offer a new deal to this 31-year-old star who has started just one game this season

Why Chelsea should avoid handing Willian a new deal

Chelsea have been one of the bright spots in the Premier League, thanks to their transfer ban.

Frank Lampard’s hands were tied as he couldn’t buy any players and was forced to play several young players.

That has worked out well for him with Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount starring for the Blues so far.

However, that has come at a price with players like Willian not featuring regularly this season.

The 31-year-old has started just one Premier League game this season and told the Evening Standard that he wants to stay at Stamford Bridge (h/t Daily Mail):

“I have one year left and I want to stay because I like to play for Chelsea.”

He claimed that there was a lot more to achieve at the club and his aim was to land the Champions League with the Blues.

Willian

The Brazilian is in the final 12 months of his deal and the Blues need to avoid handing him a new one.

Chelsea’s ban should be over next season

The Blues were unable to buy any players due to a transfer ban but that should change in the next summer window when they can spend.

Willian has been inconsistent over the past couple of seasons, and it is time for some fresh legs at the Bridge.

Lampard has done a fantastic job of promoting some young players and he could bring in someone to replace the Brazilian.

Further, the winger is already 31 and his powers are on the wane. The Blues cannot hand players new deals, such as they did with David Luiz, especially those who are coming to the end of their careers.

A switch to another league would do wonders for Willian too as not many competitions are as demanding as the Premier League is.

Pedro and Christian Pulisic have looked good out wide this season, and the Blues should look for another winger soon.

The Brazilian was also linked with Barcelona last season (h/t Express), and it was a major surprise why the Blues didn’t take up the option.

Verdict

Chelsea need to sign better players in the coming months and letting Willian leave isn’t a bad option.

The Brazilian’s best years are behind him and it is time for some freshness in the Chelsea attack.
