Why Chelsea should not think twice about signing Thomas Meunier
Chelsea are heading into a new era in with Frank Lampard at the helm and he’s already shown signs that he’s ready to take some big decisions when required.
Letting David Luiz go to Arsenal was one of the decisions that surprised quite a few and while Chelsea have looked a little open defensively, there couldn’t have been much of a case for Luiz’s inclusion.
It’d be unfair to blame some of the results entirely on the defence as the midfield isn’t the most aggressive and well-equipped but one player who has really struggled with individual errors so far this season is Cezar Azpilicueta.
The 28-year-old Spaniard is the captain of the side and has been one of the most consistent players in the Premier League for the best part of the decade, playing a big part in some of Chelsea’s success in that time.
However, with Frank Lampard looking to build a very strong attacking unit, maybe he should go for a more modern choice and one name that they’ve been linked with in the past is Belgian international Thomas Meunier.
The 27-year-old has not been fancied by current Paris Saint-Germain boss Thomas Tuchel and isn’t a favour at the Parc des Princes and this could be the perfect opportunity for the right-back to play in the Premier League.
He would have no trouble fitting into the Premier League as he’s a physical specimen at 6 ft 3 inches, is a fantastic attacking full-back, who creates a lot of chances for his centre-forwards and has a lot of European experience.
He’s also got a lot of confidence about him and his presence would help this young Chelsea dressing room.
The Premier League has seen so many of Belgium’s golden generation succeed and it’d only be right that another one from the generation finally makes a step in the blue kit at Stamford Bridge.
