Why Chelsea should rather stick to Conte than replacing him with this controversial Frenchman

Chelsea Football Club is facing some tough times, not just on the pitch but off it as well. Chelsea finished 5th in the Premier League, meaning that the Blues will be playing Europa League next season.

The FA Cup victory has had no positive impact at all. Antonio Conte seems to be on borrowed time as Chelsea as actively looking for a new manager to replace him. Conte hasn’t been sacked yet but it looks like it is a matter of when and not if.

The football under Conte wasn’t the best either but the Blues are used to that kind of football as long as it gets results. However, Chelsea has struggled for the majority of the season.

Maurizio Sarri seemed set to replace Conte but he has a buyout clause of £7m but Chelsea have refused to meet it.

With Sarri seemingly out of the picture now, shocking news has popped up that Laurent Blanc is now the number one target for Chelsea to replace Antonio Conte. Blanc hasn’t been involved in football since Paris Saint Germain in 2016.

Blanc was a very successful player, playing for some of the top European clubs and winning multiple trophies, including the World Cup with France in 1998. Blanc is a fairly successful manager too. In his first managerial job at Bordeaux, he finished second in the league and won the Ligue 1 Manager of the Year award.

Next season, his Bordeaux side won the league, along with domestic cups. This led to a job for the French National Team where Blanc failed. France were eliminated from the quarterfinals at Euro 2012.

He then became the PSG manager and won three league titles in three seasons in charge at the Parc des Princes along with eight domestic cups. He instilled winning mentality in the PSG side but could never make it past the quarterfinals of the Champions League. Just like Unai Emery, he was let go because of that.

Blanc is a good manager and his teams play a possession based system. It isn’t as exciting and attacking as Pep Guardiola or Maurizio Sarri but is still better than what Chelsea are currently witnessing. He may be a decent signing and might even win a trophy or two at Stamford Bridge. However, Chelsea should not hire him.

He was involved in a racism scandal during his time as France manager and was accused of not favouring Blacks or Arabs. That is totally unacceptable. Moreover, his man management skills are not too great. He has never done well in Europe and generally fails to counter the tactics of other great managers.

He is rigid and almost never changes his team’s style. Player power has made Chelsea sack multiple managers in the past and Blanc would succumb to that. He isn’t the right signing for a top club like Chelsea and certainly isn’t the one for a long-term.

Blanc is not the manager Chelsea need at this time of crisis. They should certainly go for better options or stick with Conte rather than appointing Blanc.
