Chelsea signing this 17-year-old sensation for just £3m would be quite a safe investment

Why Chelsea signing Matias Godoy would be a safe bet

According to TyC Sports (h/t Football.London), west London side Chelsea have submitted a bid of around £3m in an attempt to sign Argentine teenager Matias Godoy.

The 17-year old Atletico Rafaela striker impressed with his performances in the Under-17 World Cup and Chelsea’s interest in him does not come as a surprise.

It would not be an easy job to procure the youngster to Stamford Bridge, as Chelsea face stiff competition from Italian outfits AC Milan and Inter Milan, according to TyC Sports (h/t Football.London).

With the January transfer window fast approaching, the Milan clubs have an advantage over the English side since Chelsea are facing a two-window ban.

FIFA had imposed a ban after the Blues were found guilty of breaching regulations when it came to transfers – mostly involving minors.

With the ban in effect, Lampard, who arrived in the summer, was left with no other option but to move forward with the squad already at his disposal.

The Londoners will get a chance to make an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, on November 20th. It will be interesting to see if their ban gets overturned ahead of the January window (h/t Football.London).

Nevertheless, things have not been bad for the Blues, as they are sitting comfortably at third place on the table.

Meanwhile, manager Lampard’s belief in the youth players has certainly paid off. It has also changed the complexion of Chelsea’s overall dealings with players.

The Blues are currently on fire, registering six successive wins in the league. In fact, they fielded the most youthful side (average of 24 years and 88 days) in Premier League history against Crystal Palace last Saturday.

With Lampard favouring youth over experience and allowing his players to play with total freedom, the results have been pretty impressive.

Hence, it is not surprising that the Blues are targeting the 17-year old Godoy, who scored three goals and assisted once in four matches at the Under-17 World Cup in Brazil.

Unfortunately for Godoy, his goalscoring exploits came to a sudden halt when Argentina were knocked out 3-1 by Paraguay in the Round of 16.

As far as Chelsea are concerned, Tammy Abraham is currently in sensational form and has already chipped in with 10 goals.

He is placed second in the top-scorers’ chart behind Leicester City forward Jamie Vardy, who has 11 to his name.  

With Tammy doing the bulk of the scoring, chances have been limited for Michy Batshuayi, who has managed just seven league appearances as a substitute. The Belgian has one goal to his credit.

Meanwhile, old guard Olivier Giroud has featured in just a single game and has fallen down the pecking order with Lampard clearly opting to bank on his young guns.

Verdict  

Though it is too early to comment on the teenager’s abilities in front of the goal, it definitely looks like a safe bet for the Blues with Lampard promoting young blood in his squad.

Moreover, Giroud (33) is past his prime and nearing the end of his career. Hence, signing Godoy seems like a safe investment if Chelsea’s ban gets overturned.
