Man Utd signing this 25-year-old PL-proven star to shore up midfield would be one of their better transfer moves

Why Emre Can would be a smart signing for Manchester United

According to a report from the Sky Sports, Manchester United are interested in a January swoop for Juventus midfielder Emre Can.

Emre Can, 25, who left Liverpool to join Juventus last summer after running down his contract, is desperate to return to the Premier League and exit the Turin giants, for whom he currently cannot get a game under Maurizio Sarri.

After a decent start to life in Turin, making 29 appearances in the Serie A last season, the Germany international is yet to start a game this term.

However, given Can is out of favour and can’t get playing time at Juventus, and given it seems clear he wouldn’t have played much if he’d stayed at Liverpool, a move to Manchester United would make complete sense.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eyeing New Year additions, particularly in midfield after failing to replace Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini during the summer transfer window.

Fellaini and Herrera’s departures left the Red Devils light in the midfield, with Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay, Nemanja Matic and Fred their only senior players available in that area.

McTominay has been one of the best players in an otherwise dismal campaign for United. With Pogba’s future up in the air, Fred and Andreas Pereira not taking their chances and Matic simply past his prime, midfield reinforcements during the winter transfer window stands as a no-brainer.

Signing Emre Can would make a lot of sense for all parties involved. He hasn’t quite hit the heights that were expected of him upon his arrival at Juventus, however, and with Solskjaer desperate to add midfielders to his ranks this summer, the 25-year-old might come in handy for the United boss.

In Solskjaer’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, Can and McTominay would be the double-pivot with the latter have the responsibility to be the deepest lying midfielder protecting the back four.

Pogba will have more freedom to impact the attacking aspect of the game while Can will have to take up the role of a box to box midfielder.

Can is calm on the ball and strong in the air. The Germany international has good positional awareness and he makes great use of his physicality and burst of pace.

The 25-year-old can play in several positions across the midfield and his pace and power complemented by his work-rate would make him a top addition to United’s midfield.

Plus, the ex-Bayer Leverkusen man’s previous Premier League experience with United’s arch-rivals, Liverpool, would also be valuable for Solskjaer’s side.

Verdict

Can would improve the United squad and count on playing week in and week out—something which, at 25, he really should be.

Thus, the Red Devils should make a move for the Germany international in January.
