Why Everton must dodge this £25m bullet and stick to their current crop

Why Everton Must Avoid Signing Norwich’s James Maddison

According to reports, Everton are amongst a host of Premier League clubs interested in signing £25m-rated Norwich starlet, James Maddison.

The 21-year-old will be out for 8 to 10 weeks rather than the 6-month layoff he feared when he got injured in Sunday’s 5-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday. The player’s expected quick return has alerted the Premier League clubs.

It has seemed inevitable for some time that Maddison would be on his way out of Carrow Road this summer. Despite Maddison netting 15 times in the Championship, Daniel Farke’s Norwich couldn’t even make the playoffs. He signed a new four-year contract last June but might leave Carrow Road following the Canaries’ failure to gain promotion this season.

However, Norwich will be determined to keep hold of their midfield ace, four months after losing their talented creative midfielder Alex Pritchard to Huddersfield Town.

Maddison has lit up the Championship this season with his dazzling displays in the midfield. The 21-year-old became a permanent member in the Norwich side and grabbed everyone’s attention with a number of eye-catching displays. He is a technically gifted player with an eye for the goal.

A prodigy from the Coventry City academy, Maddison is capable of operating both in central and attacking midfield. He has exceptional passing skills, crossing abilities and is capable of scoring from anywhere on the pitch. His exquisite dribbling skills make him treat to watch, while his set-piece abilities cannot be ignored.

The No.10 role suits Maddison the most as he links up the play between midfield and attack quite brilliantly. It is that position where one would get to see him at his creative best as his twinkle-feet helps him glide past defenders with ease and produce chances for his teammates to score. However, he also possesses the discipline to play in central midfield but that’s when his influence in games reduces.

Speaking about Everton, they are not short of central and creative midfielders. Everton boast the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin, Idrissa Gueye, Tom Davies and Gylfi Sigurdsson in the midfield department but they have not been at their best, with the Toffees struggling this season.

Sam Allardyce’s uninspiring and dull style of play has not allowed the players to express themselves freely. While Allardyce has done his job of guiding Everton to a healthy finish in the league, his side have seldom produced the kind of football the fans have been crying out to watch all season long.

While Everton may need the creative spark in midfield, Allardyce must simply not go for Norwich star James Maddison. The English manager has a lot of talented midfielders at his disposal and should try to utilise them next season.
